History

Humor champion Nasrettin Hodja often reflected the typical Turkish and mentality in his stories. He makes us laugh and at the same time, makes us think about: the fun and the serious, that go hand in hand, but let's try to tell you about Nasrettin Hodja life and times. Briefly: It is said that he was born in 1208 in Akşehir, a small village near the town of Eskisehir. He studied in various schools in Sivrihisar and Konya, but he never left Akşehir where he lived most of his life.

It is known that he taught and interpreted "Kudur-in Cherif", a grand reference book on Hanefiernas statute book. His wit can be found as a common thread in all his stories. There is an idiomatic expression with us: when someone ends up in a strange situation, and have to laugh at his/her own situation, we say: "We became like Hodjan (Hocaya döndük)" and suddenly our situations is as one of the Hodja stories. Nasrettin Hodja tales never become obsolete.
